On White Swan Lake in the reeds, very Dark/white feathers which contrasted easily against the brown reeds. Showed for a couple of minutes just in the reeds then dropped down and wasn't seen again dispite waiting another 20 minutes.

One located by me at 15:40 which showed extremely badly! Fraser turned up and located another at 16:05 which walked out into the open and showed really well for about ten minutes.

ad. Climbed up reeds in same place as last night, preened for 5 mins and then flew 20 yards left, stayed in same position until too dark to see. I think it is an adult.

At last Bittern, this one flapped its way to the top of the reeds at 16:15, even in blustery, freezing conditions. From the Eastern most fishing swim of N end WSL, look WNW towards the pale tree trunk and come 1-2 scopes widths (approx 20-30 yards) right, in the front reeds for at least 10 mins. This bird has a rufous neck, with good contrast in moustacial stripes. Too far & dark to age.

Seen from bench in SW corner, flying over the entire length of the reeds on the north side, west to east, till it dropped down out of sight. I waited 20 more minutes but it didn't re-appear. The eastern reeds are difficult to see except from the A329 entrance.

Dark bird already in reeds which PBT had watched for 40 mins, then a second dark bird flew in performed for 10-15 mins but unusually flew off south up WSL at 17:04. I believe this 2nd bird is not the pale one seen 21st and prior dates.

Viewed from fishing swim with bench next to it, a dark bird in reeds just left of most left hand post, second bird alot lighter browns -quite far right, about 60+ yards left of right hand end of reeds. None seen at Lavell's tonight, but was seen this morning, so likely to be still in area.

2 spotted in reed bed. One stepped on to wooden jetty on far left, stayed briefly and returned about half an hour later. Second bird was flushed out and settled in reeds behind fenced area. Stayed for about an hour.

In reed beds . One posing beautifully on a post near fencing in water and then chased off into middle of the patch by another bittern from behind. Great stuff!

It has just been reported to me that it was seen at close range at lunchtime on 9th Jan by N.Ellis - along stream on south side of pit. Also Firecrest. Might be worth checking here and Brimpton GP.
